ووصفت الصحيفة عملية التحرير بأنها «متعجلة ومشوهة»، مشيرة إلى أن كبار المحررين لم يشاركوا في الموضوع بشكل كاف. وكان بينيت قد تولى قيادة صفحة الرأي في «نيويورك تايمز» منذ العام 2016. وبعد استقالته امس، وصفه ناشر الصحيفة أرثر جريج سولزبيرغر بـ «الصحافي الموهوب والنزيه» الذي أشرف على «تحوّل كبير» في قسم الرأي داخل الصحيفة. ورغم هذا المديح، إلا أن بيان الناشر تضمن حديثاً عن «انهيار كبير» حصل في عمليات التحرير تبعاً لوصفه، وكشف عن اتفاق بين الرجلين لطرح «فريق جديد لقيادة القسم خلال فترة من التغيير الكبير».
